Magnesium, Next Most Important to Air & Water
Dr
Marrc Harris states the most important substances to life are Air,
Water and then Magnesium. It is an essential mineral involved in
virtually everything that goes on inside the body. It is especially
utilized in our muscular system, bones, and nervous system. One of its
most important roles is as an enabler of healthy enzyme function.
Magnesium is involved in more than 300 different enzyme-related
reactions in the body’s cells, adding up to being involved in over 600
of life’s functions.
Let’s look at just one very important function to health and wellness, sleep:
- Getting better sleep
- Reducing the risk of insomnia
- Staving off restless sleep or frequent waking
- Promoting deeper, more sound sleep
- Maintaining healthy levels of GABA
- Staving off restless leg syndrome
Research published in Nutrition Reviews found magnesium
deficiencies to be present in approximately 60% of people in the United
States. Older adults are more vulnerable to magnesium deficiency. Women
are also at higher risk for low magnesium, especially with age.
Healthy magnesium levels protect metabolic health, stabilize mood, keep
stress in check, promote better sleep, and contribute to heart and bone
health. Because of food processing, most people are magnesium deficient.
Even when people generally eat their dark leafy greens, broccoli, and
other magnesium-containing raw foods, we’re still not getting the amount
of nutrients we should be due to over farming and modern farming
techniques. Our produce is deficient in nutrients, which causes our
body’s deficiencies.
How Magnesium Helps with Sleep and Other Life Functions
The bottom line with daytime function and sleep is that you and your
brain need to relax. Stress is in every part of our day. Not all brains
are graced with adequate off switches. On a nutritional level, research
has shown magnesium to help with that. Opti-Adrenal support is an important aide in our daily stress levels as well.
On a chemical level, magnesium aids this process by activating the
parasympathetic nervous system, the system responsible for getting you
calm and relaxed. It regulates neurotransmitters and melatonin, and
binds to GABA receptors, the neurotransmitter responsible for quieting
down nerve activity. This is important all day and all night.
In one study on insomnia, older adults were given 500 mg of magnesium or
a placebo. Overall, the magnesium group had a better quality of sleep.
This group also exhibited higher levels of renin and melatonin, two
hormones that help regulate sleep. Essential Melatonin is another consideration.
Small studies have found that magnesium supplements may help elderly
people fall asleep faster and can also help those with restless legs
syndrome accomplish more and deeper sleep time.
Another study concluded that, “Supplementation of magnesium appears to
improve subjective measures of insomnia such as ISI score, sleep
efficiency, sleep time and sleep onset latency, early morning awakening,
and likewise, insomnia objective measures such as concentration of
serum renin, melatonin, and serum cortisol, in elderly people.”
