 In this article, let’s concentrate on the nutritional miracle of Muscle Rx.  Muscle can be regenerated, even in advancing age with the appropriate diet and exercise.    It may surprise you that muscle aging may start as early as age thirty unless you help prevent it.  Research shows you lose an average of nearly seven pounds of muscle per decade.

Why Maintaining Muscle Mass Is So Important
As muscle ages, it diminishes in size, strength and its aerobic capacity. This yields to a decline in metabolic function.  The biological role of muscles goes way beyond movement and mobility. Our muscles are responsible for keeping our metabolic system functioning optimally.  Maintaining muscle mass helps protect against metabolic and hormonal decline, obesity, diabetes and cardiovascular disease.
 
Muscle mass and health also enhances cognitive function and slows down the aging process. Given the biological and metabolic importance of muscles, age-related muscle degradation can trigger and mediate a health crisis. Therefore, loss of muscle mass equates to loss of physical energy, a tendency to gain excess weight, enhanced vulnerability to disease, and accelerates aging.
 
In our youth, we have so much muscle, we only require 30% of it to carry on quite well.  As we lose muscle, what used to be easy, now becomes hard to accomplish. Activities we used to take for granted like climbing stairs, exercise, work and just getting out of a car becomes challenging and compromises our balance and agility.  Sarcopenia increases the risk of falling, which can have life threatening consequences. Falls are the most common cause of hip fractures among seniors.

    Insulin Resistance Promotes Muscle Wasting
Maintaining healthy insulin sensitivity is extremely important in maintaining healthy muscle and avoids sarcopenia.  When you are young and responsive to insulin, it prevents your muscle from breaking down between meals and overnight. The mechanism responsible for this is called mTOR (Mammalian Target of Rapamycin), which is part of the insulin pathway. This is why insulin sensitivity is essential for proper protein building in your muscle.  In short, to build muscle, the mTOR mechanism must be activated. If your insulin receptors are insensitive, this cannot occur and muscle wasting becomes inevitable. The mTOR mechanism can be activated through both diet and exercise.
