Strength Tape: Article II: The Achilles Heel from Hell
We have our second article from Dr Smalldone, one of our January 2015 Seminar Presenters.
"The Smaldone's"
In my practice we see patients with all types of physical symptoms. This one case in particular was like a sci-fi movie. An older patient about 50 years old came into my office crying as she walked down the hall. Literally, tears were running down her face. Each step she took looked like agony. I asked her how long she had been like that, assuming it was her back that was hurt. She said to me, "Five years". I looked at her and said, "Really? Like this?" She said, "Yes. Every step I take is complete agony for me."
As the history continued, she said it was her foot that was the problem. So I continued to take an in depth history. She had an MRI and an x-ray. She had gone to a dance class and this pain started afterwards. She had also been to many MD's, orthopedists, and podiatrists for her problem; all with no favorable results.
I finally said, when we were ready for the exam, "Okay, let's take a look". She pulled up both pant legs. I could not believe what I was seeing. Literally on each Achilles, she had one golf ball size, blood red mass. It was an epic amount of scar tissue that had been building up over the last five years. I told her no promises but I would do my best to help her.
I started with putting her feet in high heeled wedged shoes at all times. This bio-mechanically shortened the stretch on her Achilles. Next, I did some myofascial stripping of the Achilles. I told her it would hurt, and that the first time is always the worst. It was, and I gave her icing instructions for home. I proceeded to use the cold laser for three 30 second bursts for 5 of the treatments. Next, I put three vertical strips of strength tape starting from the Metatarsal heads, pulling back at 50% stretch to the mid calves. This did three things: 1. Supported the Achilles in action. 2. Provided proper lymphatic drainage to the area. 3. The ionic charge of the tape reduced free radical formation. Lastly, but most importantly, I adjusted the talus and calcaneus.
Fast forward 15 visits into treatment: The patient reports after five years of excruciating agony with every step on both feet, that it is 100% resolved. The patient has no pain at all, no scar tissue, no redness or swelling, nothing, nada, caput. At the end of the treatment, as I was embracing the sobbing patient, she said, "Thank you. I was living in hell and you saved me." With tears in her eyes and lipstick all over my new jacket, I said, "You're welcome."
