Heavy Metal Detoxification – An Article & A Webinar
Heavy Metals and other toxic accumulation are an ever increasing problem. Much of the treatment research has been accomplished with IV Chelation. I have personally had several series of these treatments as a preventative measure.
When it comes to day to day evaluation and treatment within my scope of practice, I rely on hair analysis and compare hair minerals and heavy metal levels to a comprehensive blood study to see their correlation into body dysfunction. I have formulated an oral chelator and have used several oral chelation formulas. Also, I rely on DMSA for challenge and treatment.
In some of the most complicated blood studies we have found heavy metals to be one of the root causes of dysfunction. It is Dr Merkle’s and my experience that heavy metal and other toxic evaluation and detoxification are at the foundation of balancing the blood picture and therefore proper function.
20,000 Industrial Facilities are Releasing Toxic Chemicals Daily. Over 4 billion pounds of toxic chemicals are released by industry into the nation's environment each year, including 72 million pounds of recognized carcinogens. Many of these contain heavy metals and toxic halogens. Mark Hyman reports there are 287 drugs/toxins found in the umbilical cords of babies today, on average.
Therefore it is imperative that we recognize heavy metals, toxic halogens and other toxic accumulations and use proper evaluations and detoxification methods to help restore optimal function. In my practice and in our seminars we teach the use of hair analysis, blood studies, Muscle Response Therapy (MRT), specific nutrition, foot baths, laser, far infrared saunas etc. in this process.
The build-up of heavy metals in the body can lead to a variety of health problems [1-3]. Poisonous or nonessential metals such as lead (Pb), mercury (Hg), cadmium (Cd), and aluminum (Al) have been associated with pathologies in the nervous, cardiovascular, hematopoietic, gastrointestinal and immunological systems as well as renal dysfunction, anemia, liver problems, cancer, and Alzheimer’s disease [4-15].
In addition, nutritional trace elements can be toxic at concentrations outside their physiological range. Excessive levels of iron (Fe), manganese (Mn), copper (Cu), chromium (Cr) and zinc have been associated with conditions such as degenerative brain diseases, oxidative damage and heart problems [16-20]. Thus, it is important to regulate essential minerals while limiting toxic metal build-up in the body, and a means of clearing toxic or excess metals from the body is needed.
Chelation therapy has been used for removing poisonous metals such as Pb, Hg, Cd, and Al, as well as reducing abnormal accumulations of trace nutrients such as Fe, Cu, and Zn [21-24]. Chelation therapy employs anionic chelating agents such as ethylene diaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) to bind heavy metal cations found in the blood.
Once EDTA bound, these metals can be removed through the kidneys. There is evidence that EDTA chelation benefits patients by removing toxic and trace elements from diseased organs and blood vessel walls [25-29]. The
US Food and Drug administration has approved intravenous use of sodium EDTA (Na-EDTA) for treatment of hypercalcaemia, but its broader use in improving cardiovascular health is still considered controversial [30-34].
Since many of us cannot or choose not to use IV Chelation in our practices, let’s discuss oral chelation and chelator nutrition. Using Oral Chelation, Gary Gordon, MD, DO, MD(H) documents improved blood flow to the legs, head and heart of patients experiencing problems of clot, spasm and arrhythmia. He states less than 5% had to have surgery for these conditions following oral chelation, dietary recommendations, nutrition and exercise programs…
For treatment, I use Homeopathic Homochords of the heavy metals that have been found to be at high levels upon examination and testing. For instance if lead is high on the hair analysis and/or Muscle Response Testing (MRT), I will use the BioEnergX Homeopathic formula MaX Lead at one to three drops at a time, up to two or three times per day. In conjunction with this type of formula, I utilize CheleX, which is an oral chelator in a combination synergistic blend of know detoxifiers.
CheleX contains:
DMSA (meso-2,3 dimercaptosuccini acid)
EDTA (as calcium EDTA)
Cilantro Leaf Extract
Chlorella
Allicin (as organic garlic bulb extract)
N-Acetyl-L-Cysteine
Alpha Lipoic Acid: An antioxidant which facilitates the metabolism of Vitamin C, E, and glutathione
We normally recommend one to 4 CheleX per day in conjunction with the Homeopathic Homochord detox metals and/or halogens. We also add an essential fatty acid during this cleansing program like LipiChol (krill oil) or good fish oil (Omega Pure)…. During our detox program we will also add back good minerals (MinRx) that might be pulled out with the harmful substances.
Dr Van Merkle and I will teach a Webinar on Oral Chelation this Thursday February 20, 2014 at 6:00 EST. We will cover the above mentioned nutrients and larger Doses of DMSA in a challenge and treatment protocol. I will not list that protocol in this Puzzle Piece, as we feel it needs some instructions we will cover in the webinar.
